Advancing Drug Science and Treatment

The Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics at Bangladesh Medical College (BMC) focuses on rational drug use, clinical pharmacology, and patient safety through evidence-based prescribing practices and pharmacovigilance. Our faculty trains students in drug therapy optimization, adverse reaction monitoring, and antimicrobial stewardship essential for Bangladesh's healthcare challenges.

We support clinical decision-making, national drug policy, and research on tropical disease pharmacotherapy while training MBBS students and healthcare professionals in safe and effective medication management.

Mission / Objectives

  • Preparing students for their future role as competent clinicians, ethical researchers, and devoted academicians.
  • Explaining the foundation of drug selection and dosage schedules through effective learning of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles.
  • Promoting rational prescribing through utilization of guidelines and selection from essential drug lists and authorized drug compendia/formularies.
  • Creating awareness regarding adverse complications of irrational prescribing and polypharmacy and ways to combat such practices.
  • Developing skills for objective assessment of drug information sources and recognizing their merits and demerits.
  • Encouraging evidence-based prescribing while considering efficacy, safety, suitability, and cost of drugs.
  • Cultivating healthy doctor-patient relationships to build communication, trust, and compliance.
  • Maintaining etiquette and respect towards patients while understanding their autonomy regarding treatment.
  • Recognizing and demonstrating proactiveness towards Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) reporting.

Services and Activities

  • Routine assessment to evaluate knowledge, skills, and attitudes regarding evidence-based medicines.
  • Correlating the basis of drug use in a given clinical condition.
  • Pharmacovigilance: Adverse drug reaction reporting and drug safety surveillance.
  • Promoting Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) awareness among healthcare professionals.
  • Antimicrobial Stewardship: Antibiotic optimization and resistance pattern monitoring.
  • Drug Information Services: Evidence-based therapy recommendations and interaction analysis.
  • Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams for integrated learning.
  • Interactive sessions, performances, and poster presentations.
  • Research activities involving various topics including medical education, rational drug use, and pharmacovigilance.

Available Laboratories / Units / Specialty Services

The department has laboratory facilities equipped with multiple forms of glassware, hot air oven, and kymograph devices to study dose-response relationships, complexities of drug interactions, and their effects on body physiology.

Academic & Clinical Facilities

  • Lecture gallery equipped with multimedia support and internet communication.
  • Tutorial room for focused group discussions and problem-based learning.
  • Extensive collections of literature and peer-reviewed publications from recognized authoritative bodies such as World Health Organization (WHO), DGDA, etc.
